Length of permission of Visa

Hello!
Do you know what I should select as the “length of permission of visa” while applying for Stage 2?
I was endorsed for Talent, so should I select 3 years?
Or it’s better to select 5 years since that’s the maximum limit?

Thank you!

You can select any number of years you like irrespective of Promise or Talent. The length you select now will be till when your visa will be valid and at that point you can either extend or apply for ILR if eligible and keen or give up the visa. Depends on your personal plans what you choose.

Thank you very much!

If you dont plan to apply with dependents, and also woll splendor time.in the uk, you can select 3 years. By the third year you should get ILR. If you are applying with spouse or children the you can do five years if you can afford ot so that they all get the number of years easy need to qualify for ILR.

Thank you very much!

I need your help/advice on this matter. I chose a 3-year visa because I received a Exceptional Talent visa and wasn’t planning to travel much within that period, which would make me eligible for ILR. For the same reason, I also chose a 3-year visa for my dependents. Can I apply for their visa extension alongside my ILR application when the time comes?
Thanks

Hi!! What would be that rationale behind applying for less than 5 years as a promise applicant? Isn’t it always best to apply for 5?

If you have a promise endorsement and the funds available, then yes it’s best to apply directly for 5 years. However, it’s is expensive with the IHS, so some people choose to do it a few years at a time instead.

Yes, you can apply for an extension then. technically it would still be GTV dependent.

5 years means you have to pay the IHS surcharge for 5 years in advance. It can come out to a substantial sum if you’re paying for you and dependents.

And when we apply for extension, do we have to pay the visa fee again? Or just the IHS?

Don’t really know that. I applied for a 5 year visa to save the hassle on extensions so I didn’t really check the fees for that

Yes you have to pay the stage 2 fee + IHS fee again in extension.

With dependents, it seems like the two options are:

  1. 3-year visa + ILR for you + 2-year extension for them + eventually ILR for them

  2. 5-year visa + ILR for everyone

Isn’t #1 going to be much cheaper? Paying an unnecessary two years of IHS for yourself is more than paying the visa application fee again for the dependent extension

That depends on the number of dependents. IHS for yourself is about £1000/year, extension fee is £776 per dependent. It about evens out if you have 3, and for more than that it’s cheaper to go for 5 years.

Hi everyone! I have a similar question about the length of visa for the Global Talent Visa (GTV) and would love some feedback from those who have been in a similar situation.

I entered the UK in September 2023 on a Skilled Worker Visa, along with my spouse and child (who turns 17 this year) as my dependants. Yesterday, I received my Stage 1 Endorsement as an Exceptional Talent (1 November).

As the main GTV applicant, I can apply for a 2-year visa, which would allow me to meet the 3-year ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) requirement. However, my dependants would still need an additional 2 years to reach their 5-year ILR eligibility.

So, my question is:

  • Option 1: I apply for a 2-year GTV (total cost: £5,174), then apply for ILR, and afterward, extend my dependants’ visas for another 2 years.
  • Option 2: I apply for a 4-year GTV for myself and my dependants now, so we can all meet the ILR requirements by September 2028, at a total cost of £10,384.

If I go with Option 1, is it generally straightforward to extend the dependant visas when the time comes, or would Option 2 be a better choice for peace of mind?

Thanks for any insights!

Hi @HML, that’s great to hear! When did you submitted your application, and how many edits did you got before getting your endorsement? Thanks

Hi @Najafali,

I started a new topic to share my experience in detail (From Rejection to Endorsement: How I Succeeded on My Second Attempt (Applied Within the UK)), In short, I didn’t have any edit. I prepared everything in advance and completed the submission to Tech Nation on the same day I applied to the Home Office for the Global Talent Visa Stage 1.

The total costs for option 1 aren’t complete, since you will have to pay additional IHS years + visa application fees when you extend.
I understand from other people that it’s not hard to extend - but in my case I preferred to get 5 years visas for everyone to avoid the process down the time.

Thank you @hsafra. You’re right. I checked, and the visa application fee for each dependent applying to extend their stay under the Global Talent visa is £716, which would be £1,432 for both dependents, plus an additional 2 years of IHS.

Given this, it makes a lot of sense to proceed with option 2: applying for a 4-year GTV for myself and my dependents now. This way, we can all meet the ILR requirements by September 2028, as we’ve already accumulated one year since September 2023.

My rough estimate cost with 2 dependant for 2year, +2 years, 4 and 5 years. It’s a huge sum. (Did I missed any other fee?)

Thank you.
