Unemployed despite GT Visa + UCL PhD & Experience

Hello

I hold a global talent visa, finished my PhD in GIS/AI & Environmental Sciences at UCL. I have 10 years of international experience. I have been looking for a job since July 2025 and even updated my CV to fit hospitality jobs. Any insights ?

Oh! @Eve Honestly, updating your CV for other roles is a smart move. It helps you earn something in the meantime and takes a bit of pressure off while you keep searching for the right job.

One thing to keep in mind is that UK employers really value UK experience. You might want to look at charity or volunteer roles related to your field, many are remote, flexible, and only need a few hours a week, most don’t pay but few give you honorarium or cover operational cost. You can add this on your CV and most will give you reference or recommendation, incase you find another job.

Another option is creating courses on Udemy. It’s a good way to showcase your expertise, build visibility and earn while you job hunt. If you ever want help with that, I’m happy to guide you. One of my own courses just went live recently - Course

All the best

Sorry to hear that, I know it’s not an easy situation. On the positive side, it’s great that you already have the GT visa, as it does give you flexibility to live in the UK and take up different kinds of roles in the meantime.

I was in a similar position after graduating from my Master’s in the UK before getting the GT visa, and I also considered a backup plan of doing a PhD and moving into teaching. Have you looked into teaching roles, either at universities or even in schools? They’re often open to candidates with a strong academic and computer science background.

Thanks so much for your empathy and understanding my situation. Since I finished my PhD last summer, I have been applying for teaching roles, pistdocs, assistants, admin, any role at various universities and schools in the UK, but did not receive any response

Thank you for your feedback. The issue is most charities don’t pay and I need to pay my rent as I have no money left and barely do 1 meal per day … I am alone in the UK, my family is abroad and cannot help, my friends cannot help too… I have a UK experience at Uni and for 1 partner of my department. Great for the Udemy recommendation, I will create a profile. Do you get clients ?

Aside teaching, have you considered applying for civil service roles. You can also try roles in the energy sector. You can drop me a message. I will see if I could refer you. If you are also on the tech nation slack group, you can post there

Thank you very much for your kind proposal @Francisca_Chiedu. Sorry for the late reply, I hadn’t seen the notification. Yes it would be great if you could refer me and share the link to the Tech Nation Slack group. I am still job hunting and struggling … Thank you in advance again for your support

@pahuja do you have the tech Nation slack link?

There’s no direct link / once someone who is endorsed fills this form, they get an email with links to a few alum channels to join including the slack.
