Hello!
I am currently in the process of gathering my application for the Global Talent Visa and would love some feedback or advice regarding my evidences and application on the whole.
I have been working as a Sound Designer in the video game industry since 2020. During that time I have worked both internally at a development studio and now externally at co-development studio, contributing to multiple AAA titles in development with well established and widely known international clients.
Mandatory Criteria - Exceptional Promise:
- Evidence: Item #1, Games Portfolio
- Including credits and descriptions of work done on a selection of projects during the last 6 years
- Evidence: Item #2, Offer Letters
- From the 2 studios I have had full-time employment with along with a notice of salary increase in my recent
- Evidence: Item #3, Accolades
- Awards and nominations for game titles I have worked on
Optional Criteria #1 - Working in a product-led digital technology company and significant contributions in the digital technology sector:
- Evidence: Item #4, Game A, Select Articles
- This evidence item includes screenshots from major publications as well as community discussions that highlight and praise the audio contributions of this game, as well as the general impact the game has made on the industry from a consumer and development level. The game was created by a very well known publisher.
- Evidence: Item #5, Game B - Select Articles
- This evidence item includes screenshots from articles by major publications highlighting recognition of audio contributions to a well known game IP by a highly esteemed publisher.
- Evidence: Item #6, Other Games - Select Articles
- Similarly to the other two evidences, I highlight a couple games from earlier in my career that felt like big turning points for me in my career. They are less strong than the first two evidences in that they don’t specifically highlight audio, but are simply articles about the game written by major publications. I also describe the significance of these to me and the development / growth of my career.
Optional Criteria #2 - Contributions to the digital technology sector outside of work:
- Evidence: Item #7, Select Conferences
- A list of the conferences I have spoken at during my time in the field including descriptions of my contributions.
- Evidence: Item #8, Letter 4
- An “extra” Letter of Recommendation that supports the previous criteria nicely, written by the co-founder (a UK native) of my most frequented international conference.
Optional Criteria #3 - Product innovation in the digital technology sector:
- Evidence: Item #9, Game C
- I worked on this game that was developed by an educational tech company that focusses their efforts on science. The game was initially created to help patients manage pain while going through certain procedures. I feel this company and specific product is a wonderful innovation and contribution to the digital technology sector. I included screenshots of articles about the game as well as the company’s about page.
Note:
Within the evidences, I have provided links to nearly everything included as well as short descriptions of them and their significance.
Questions:
Evidences
The community discussions I have included in some are on “official discussion” forums on Reddit or other community-based forums to show not only how critics or established publications received the product, but how it impacted the community.
- Will including things like reddit be harmful to my application, or will it, if anything, just be disregarded?
Exceptional Talent vs Exceptional Promise
As I understand it, my application will automatically be considered as a Exceptional Talent due to the number of years I have worked in the field, but I had been unsure if I am qualified as such (I had gathered it looks like you have to be Director or CEO level but I also know of someone personally at my mid-career level who has received Exceptional Talent status).
- Is it possible to apply as a Exceptional Promise and they will automatically “upgrade” it as they see fit?
- Would I be rejected for even just applying as Exceptional Promise when I should be Exceptional Talent?
Personal Background
Slightly unrelated, but also very relevant to me personally, I lived in Scotland for 2 years while studying an MSc in Sound Design and Audiovisual Practice at the University of Glasgow and have been wanting to move back ever since I left. I moved away to develop my career in Los Angeles and planned to move back as soon as I could. This is something that has been important to me and my reason for applying for this visa now.
- Is this, and any personal background, helpful information that should be shared within the application?
- If yes, is there any advice on how that should be presented?
Letters of Recommendation
I have asked a couple extra people for letters because I wanted to select the ones that were the strongest for this application and cover the most ground and variety. Letter 1 is from an old boss who now works at a major well-known tech company and goes into detail on my contributions as an audio developer, including technical contributions and skills as well inter-personal in a broad sense. Letter 2 is by a supervisor at my current studio who I worked closely with on Game B for over a year and a half that details my technical understanding as well as my development through the time we worked together on that specific project. Letter 3 is written by the client of Game B discussing our relationship during that development period and my contribution to the project.
- Is Letter 2 and 3 redundant, being about the same project, or is it good to show both internal and client relationships?
- Is it okay to include Letter 4 as supporting evidence as I have listed, or should I replace one of these letters with that one?
All that said, does my application seem strong enough based off the details I have shared to be endorsed? Are there any areas that seem weak or need improvement? Any guidance is greatly appreciated. ![]()
Thanks!
