Seeking Feedback after Refusal

Hello,

I recently applied for exceptional promise and got denied. I’d like some honest feedback before I reapply.

Profile: Product Manager with 4 years experience in Fintech

MC1; 3 News articles about bringing PayPal back to Nigeria after 21 years. For context, for about 21 years users in Nigeria couldn’t receive money via PayPal. However I led the product integration with the Product that finally lifted this restriction, opening up a new milestone for users in Nigeria. No other fintech offered this in Nigeria. The articles discuss this milestone and name me as the product leader.

MC 2: Salary Benchmark of £90k which is high for a PM with only 4 years of experience. I compared this to average salary of £67k from Glassdoor.

OC2: Product Mentorship at a structured Non-profit since 2023.

Invited to join the Board of Trustees for the Non-profit

Speaker at virtual events

Fintech activation template.

OC3: Letter from HR confirming my leadership in product expansion from Nigeria to the US. I led the team that built the product from scratch

Dashboard of transaction volumes and value

The PayPal integration with dashboards,

Slack messages from me on launch day.

Letter of recommendation

Group CEO of one of the top 500 fintechs in the world

Former SVP of Products and West Africa Lead at Meta

CTO of Marketing tech company.

They are all from former work places

I’d appreciate any helpful feedback.

Your mandatory criterion is where the application most likely fell down, and it is worth understanding why before you reapply. The press coverage is about a product milestone, and it names you as the person who led it, but that is coverage of the launch rather than independent recognition of you as a sector leader. The Guide asks for evidence that you personally have been recognised as a leading talent, and assessors draw a firm line between the two. A useful test for each piece: would it still count as recognition of you if the product it describes disappeared tomorrow?

Salary evidence hits a similar wall. The Guide is explicit that salary or remuneration information alone is insufficient, and that you have to demonstrate how you made a significant impact in the sector beyond your day-to-day activities. A Glassdoor benchmark shows you are well paid for the role, which does not by itself show sector recognition, so it carries little weight on its own.

OC3 has an evidence-quality problem. Slack messages and your own transaction dashboards count as self-reported metrics, and the Guide wants company-approved performance data or third-party validation. The employer letter needs verifiable figures sitting alongside it, not internal screenshots. Worth checking too: recommendation letters from former workplaces can look like direct colleagues or managers, and assessors weight those below arm’s-length experts.

Fixing the mandatory piece is the hardest and most important job. Get independent recognition of you as an individual in place before you resubmit.

@omonigho So sorry about the feedback but it appears you did not submit up to the 6 minimum evidence required. Also, most of the evidence you listed here are not rightfully aligned to the Tech Nation criteria.

I will suggest you give out some time, work on more rightly aligned evidence before you reapply.

All the best.

Your profile has a potentially strong core, particularly the PayPal/Nigeria product launch, but the refusal suggests the assessor may not
have been sufficiently convinced of your individual recognition and
contribution.

The MC1
evidence is potentially strong, but three articles about the same achievement
may be viewed as essentially one piece of recognition, especially if they all
cover the same launch. You therefore need to make sure the evidence provides at
least two genuinely distinct pieces of recognition and clearly establishes your
personal role, not just the company’s achievement.

I would be
cautious with the salary as MC2. A high salary can support the overall profile, but a comparison
against Glassdoor alone may not establish exceptional talent. Stronger evidence
would be external recognition, career progression, significant product
ownership, awards, or independent industry recognition.

For OC2, the structured mentoring and trustee invitation
are useful if you can demonstrate that they are genuinely outside your normal
employment and that your selection/contribution is meaningful. Speaking and the
template can be supplementary rather than the main evidence.

For OC3, the underlying product impact sounds promising,
but dashboards and Slack messages are mostly internal evidence. Strengthen the
chain between your specific decisions → product launch →
measurable outcome, ideally
with independent/client/customer evidence where possible. An HR letter
confirming leadership is helpful, but it is still employer-provided
corroboration.

Your referees
sound senior and credible, but make sure their letters provide distinct, specific
evidence of your individual achievements, leadership and contribution rather
than simply confirming your work at the same former employers.

For a
reapplication, I would focus less on adding more documents and more on
addressing the likely gap: independent evidence that you personally are
recognised as an emerging product leader, rather than evidence that you worked
on a successful fin-tech product.

Thanks. However, I submitted 8 evidence pieces. 3 MC, 3 for OC2 my mentorship over the past 3 years, speaking engagement, evidence of board of trustee appointment, my templates 2 for OC3. Including dashboards, slack messages and letter from my HR confirming my internal awards for the product launch.

Thank you. This is really helpful.

Well, based on what you listed here, it looks like you submitted MC1, MC2, OC2 and OC3 not as in chosen criteria but listed evidence. Also, news articles about bringing PayPal back to Nigeria after 21 years can demonstrate recognition of your work, depending on the context, the substance of those publications, and whether they are not promotional. However, you still need to show the leadership and oversight responsibilities you had in the development of the product, the team, or the company. The articles are recognition elements and they are supposed to validate how and what you led… Then again, salary alone is not sufficient, regardless of how much you earn.

It’s will be great to work on stronger evidence across board before you reapply.

I’d like some honest feedback before I reapply.

I hope you appreciate the honest feedback . All the best.
