Questions about evidence β€” published material, podcasts, and Optional Criterion 2 and mandatory criterion

Hi everyone, I have three questions I could not find clear answers to:
1. For the mandatory criterion, published material in professional or major trade publications, does this mean articles written BY the applicant, or articles written ABOUT the applicant by a third party, or both?
2. Does a podcast appearance count as evidence for both the mandatory criterion and optional criteria? If yes, what kind of podcast qualifies and what evidence do you need to provide?
3. For Optional Criterion 2, can two published articles in two different credible publications count as two separate pieces of evidence? Or do they need to be different types of evidence?
Any guidance from people who have been through the process would be really helpful. Thank you.

Hi @Arushi You are welcome to the forum.

On your question, it is subjective. However, I will answer based on my experience with guiding successful applicants who have used this type of evidence.

  1. For the mandatory criterion, published material in professional or major trade publications, does this mean articles written BY the applicant, or articles written ABOUT the applicant by a third party, or both?

Articles written about you show validation, this shows that industry recognises the impact of your work while articles written by you, shows you are a thought leade. Case on point, A major tech magazine interviews you, that is MC, you write a technical article for a publication, that’s OC2. Please note that there are other elements that make this evidence strong and rightly align with this criterion. But for the purpose of your question, it is simply article written about you, which shows you been recognised, and the question now is - recognised for what and by who?

  1. Does a podcast appearance count as evidence for both the mandatory criterion and optional criteria? If yes, what kind of podcast qualifies and what evidence do you need to provide?

Yes! A podcast appearance can count as evidence for both MC and OC but only if the podcast meets specific criterion standards and you present it strategically with the right supporting evidence. An instance for MC is that you were invited as a result of recognition of what you have done, if its a well known tech industry podcast, run by a recognised media outlet with significant audience reach like say (downloads, subscribers, rankings) though reach applies to OC2 too. Reach in OC2, is impact. For OC2, you were invited as a domain expert to share specialist knowledge, like you influence the field through your ideas and these had huge impact on the industry afterwards(reach). Kindly note that just one podcast talk is not strong to show sustained contribution for OC2.

  1. For Optional Criterion 2, can two published articles in two different credible publications count as two separate pieces of evidence? Or do they need to be different types of evidence?
Any guidance from people who have been through the process would be really helpful. Thank you.

No! I think two articles do not count as two separate evidence items. TN requires each evidence item to be a unique, and each evidence set must contain at least two distinct pieces of evidence. Since both articles are publications demonstrating your thought leadership, they should be grouped together within a single evidence, say (OC2 – Evidence 1: Thought Leadership Publications) rather than submitted separately.

All the best.

Thank you so much for this. The distinction between articles written by you versus about you for MC is something I had not fully understood before. And the clarification on OC2 evidence items is exactly the kind of detail that is hard to find anywhere else. Really appreciate your time.
