Personal Statement: Do I need to explain what the startup I work for does?

Hi everyone,
Quick question about the personal statement: Do we need to explain what our startup does, or is it assumed that the assessors will already understand (google search maybe?) from the company name/industry? Should we briefly describe the product and business model, or keep the focus entirely on our own role and impact?
Should we skip this explanation altogether, if not, should that be kept in PS or somewhere else? Thank you.

@natalie

Yes, you should briefly describe your product and business model - but with purpose. The PS is not just about your role, it is about the impact you and your venture will bring to the UK tech ecosystem.

The official guidance states

  • Address why you want to come to the UK, what occupation you plan, where you’ll be based, and how your work will benefit the UK digital technology sector…

So yes, a concise startup description helps to frame the context and underscore your ability to contribute and scale in the UK.

All the best.

You should definitely talk about and describe your startup in your personal statement. Since it’s a story and not your CV, go into the personal details of it. What motivated you to create the startup? What hardships did you face? How did you get through them? etc.

Thank you for your reply. I am sharing my accomplishments with metrics in OC3 (growth of a digital tech company, proven by numbers and precise projects) but I am also mentioning them on a high level in my personal statement. Is it redundant? If not, should I give specific details as well? For example, I say “I introduced new products and revenue streams” in the Personal Statement, and explain which products/revenue streams they are in my OC3. Should I still go ahead and just touch on the names of the products in my personal statement? Like, in my PS, writing “I introduced new products such as X, Y, Z”

it is not my startup, it is a startup I work for.

Thanks. It is not my venture, and I plan to get a new job in the UK. I explained what kind of roles I want to take part in my Personal Statement. Is this acceptable?

That should be fine. Ideally your goals for your personal statement should be bigger than “getting a job in the UK” - let me know if you have any Qs. Feel free to DM to get some personalised examples of goal setting.
