Which area I should apply? Business or Tech?

Hi all,

I am planning to apply for Exceptional Promise as I have approximately 3 years of experience only.

However I have a mixture experience of everything - 1.5 year as Product Analyst (this is my current job title, data scientist-sy work but not really fancy like using machine learning etc), and the rest is itty bitty works in different areas but related to technology such as product management, digital marketing and IT product operations at FAANG size company(internships).

Also even though I was thinking of applying for data scientist area…

  1. I have 2 UX patents
  2. I won 1 user experience award & 1 hackathon award.
  3. One of my projects, I was working at internal A.I based voice assistant product but still it’s working in progress, only MVP is developed. Do you think it’s okay to use as a proof? I have a demo video of MVP on YouTube and I joined here as a voice designer.
  4. I haven’t managed my github repository for data science stuff…
  5. Non-product-analyst jobs I had before were very competitive to get in so there was even online news talking about it.
  6. I’ve finished some courses on online learning platform for machine learning/NLP.(Certification provided)
  7. I worked with a FAANG size company as an external person for a collaborative project for Artifical intelligence service design
  8. Very short experience at A.I based metaverse company as a product manager

To sum up, I didn’t work mostly on data stuff externally such as participating in Kaggle or Github discussions but utilized my skills to improve user experience and to boost business impact.

Question

  1. Experts here at this forum, do you think which route I have a higher chance? business or ux or data scientist? I am concerning this because my current job title is Product Analyst
  2. I have a LoR from 1 founder(CEO), 2 Head of department from different companies. Do you think this is okay or does it have to be C-suite?
  3. If it’s not okay to capture the internal dashboard displaying my impact due to contract, should I include the stakeholder’s statements to prove my work?

Thank you!!

Question

Suggestion: Whichever one you go with doesn’t matter (provided it’s listed among the list of acceptable job roles on the Tech Nation Guide).

  1. I have a LoR from 1 founder(CEO), 2 Head of department from different companies. Do you think this is okay or does it have to be C-suite?

Suggestion: You may want to look for 2 more c-suite folks to replace the heads of department you currently have. The exception is if those HODs are working in very big organizations in which you can show evidence that they are actually big (e.g Global companies like Google, Facebook, etc or local unicorns in your home country).

  1. If it’s not okay to capture the internal dashboard displaying my impact due to the contract, should I include the stakeholder’s statements to prove my work?

Suggestion: Include every bit of evidence that increases your chances of being endorsed. It’s been made clear by Tech Nation that the data you submit will highly remain confidential and would be destroyed after a certain period of time. In the event that you are submitting an internal document that may require verification, you may want to inform someone internally within the company first.

Hello @Dawn,

Tricky one here and I can understand your dilemma.

Just my two cents here; it’s mostly about what you can demonstrate and most comfortably prove.

I would say focus on what you’ve got the most evidence (in for and what your references can most speak about). While your UX role seems the strongest, I’d say also look in between in the lines of the requirement per how you demonstrate technical/commercial contributions of your role in the organisations you’ve worked.

Also, I’d also lean to more C-level profiles, and also strong profile/achievements in the tech space if possible (safe if the HODs also have these types of qualities)

I also agree with @4rmSlum2uk, you’re better off with every bit of evidence that convincingly meets the criteria. When picking dashboards, a few lines does good also in providing context and clarity to ease decision making

Just a few thoughts, wish you the best Dawn!

Yo!

Hi @4rmSlum2uk,

Thank you so much for your detailed answer! Yeah the HODs are a part of global organizations with 10,000+ employees I am working at! But didn’t know that they should have a strong tech space, as they are from MBB consultancy… :frowning:

Anyway hanks for sharing your valuable thoughts and wishing me the best!!!
I wish the same for you!

Hello @Yemi

Thank you so much! Didnt know the C-levels need to have a strong profile in the tech place!! Adding a few lines makes sense! I will try to sort out my evidence  Thank you so much have a great day Yemi!
