If you’re applying for a Global Talent Visa (GTV) Dependent Visa, this guide explains the process and the documents I submitted. I hope this helps those currently struggling with their applications.
Understanding the GTV Dependent Visa Application
A dependent can be:
- A partner (spouse, civil partner, or long-term partner)**
- A child under 18
- In some cases, a child over 18 (if they are already in the UK as a dependent)
Your dependent can apply from inside or outside the UK, and the required documents may vary based on your situation.
First Step: Before applying, read the UK Government’s official guidance to ensure you select the correct options based on your situation:
UK Gov - GTV Dependent Visa Guidance
My Situation and How I Applied
- My dependent was outside the UK when I applied.
- I did NOT list her as a dependent during my initial GTV application.
- Despite this, she received her visa in less than 2 weeks after submitting the required documents.
Required Documents for Your Partner*
The UKVI requires evidence that your relationship is genuine and ongoing.
This can be proved in different ways depending on your situation:
If you are married or in a civil partnership that’s recognised in the UK
you’ve been living together in a relationship for at least 2 years when you apply
you’ve been in a relationship for at least 2 years when you apply but you cannot live together, for example because you’re working or studying in different places, or it’s not accepted in your culture
The UKVI accepts:
Proof of living together (if applicable) – e.g., joint tenancy agreements, utility bills, or financial commitments.
If living apart: Evidence of an ongoing commitment, such as:
- Regular communication (chats, call logs, emails).
- Financial support (bank transfers, shared expenses).
- Shared responsibilities (children, travel history, etc.).
Documents I Provided for My Application
Proof of Relationship & Communication: Since my dependent and I were living in different countries: I provided:
WhatsApp chat screenshots – I created a PDF file to upload multiple chat records.
Bank transfer screenshots – Showing financial support, also compiled into a PDF for more evidence.
Proof of address – I submitted my tenancy agreement to show accommodation for my dependent.
Life Events & Relationship Milestones
In the section for important life events, I uploaded:
Wedding photos (compiled into a PDF to include multiple pictures).
Legal marriage certificate.
Change of name document & newspaper publication confirming the name change.
Financial & Employment Evidence
A bank statement is NOT required for a GTV dependent visa (as of when I applied). However, I still provided:
My job offer letter.
PhD sponsorship letter (showing my stipend amount).
University ID cards (as a GTA and PhD student).
Other Supporting Documents
Medical test certificate (TB test).
Dependent’s education qualification.
Key Takeaways and Final Advice
DO NOT skip reading the official UKVI page to understand your specific requirements before applying.
Organize your documents in PDFs if you need to submit multiple screenshots or images.
There is NO mention of a required bank statement for dependents under the GTV route (as of my application time).
Ensure your dependent’s documents are clear, readable, and well-labeled before submitting.
This is everything I submitted, and my dependent received her visa in less than 2 weeks.
I hope this helps! If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
