Visa application for dependents insight

If you’re applying for a Global Talent Visa (GTV) Dependent Visa, this guide explains the process and the documents I submitted. I hope this helps those currently struggling with their applications.

:one: Understanding the GTV Dependent Visa Application

A dependent can be:

  • A partner (spouse, civil partner, or long-term partner)**
  • A child under 18
  • In some cases, a child over 18 (if they are already in the UK as a dependent)

Your dependent can apply from inside or outside the UK, and the required documents may vary based on your situation.

:point_right: First Step: Before applying, read the UK Government’s official guidance to ensure you select the correct options based on your situation:

:two: My Situation and How I Applied

  • My dependent was outside the UK when I applied.
  • I did NOT list her as a dependent during my initial GTV application.
  • Despite this, she received her visa in less than 2 weeks after submitting the required documents.

:three: Required Documents for Your Partner*

The UKVI requires evidence that your relationship is genuine and ongoing.
This can be proved in different ways depending on your situation:

:white_check_mark: If you are married or in a civil partnership that’s recognised in the UK
:white_check_mark: you’ve been living together in a relationship for at least 2 years when you apply
:white_check_mark: you’ve been in a relationship for at least 2 years when you apply but you cannot live together, for example because you’re working or studying in different places, or it’s not accepted in your culture

The UKVI accepts:
:one: Proof of living together (if applicable) – e.g., joint tenancy agreements, utility bills, or financial commitments.
:two: If living apart: Evidence of an ongoing commitment, such as:

  • Regular communication (chats, call logs, emails).
  • Financial support (bank transfers, shared expenses).
  • Shared responsibilities (children, travel history, etc.).

:four: Documents I Provided for My Application

:pushpin: Proof of Relationship & Communication: Since my dependent and I were living in different countries: I provided:
:white_check_mark: WhatsApp chat screenshots – I created a PDF file to upload multiple chat records.
:white_check_mark: Bank transfer screenshots – Showing financial support, also compiled into a PDF for more evidence.
:white_check_mark: Proof of address – I submitted my tenancy agreement to show accommodation for my dependent.

:pushpin: Life Events & Relationship Milestones
In the section for important life events, I uploaded:
:white_check_mark: Wedding photos (compiled into a PDF to include multiple pictures).
:white_check_mark: Legal marriage certificate.
:white_check_mark: Change of name document & newspaper publication confirming the name change.

:pushpin: Financial & Employment Evidence
:bulb: A bank statement is NOT required for a GTV dependent visa (as of when I applied). However, I still provided:
:white_check_mark: My job offer letter.
:white_check_mark: PhD sponsorship letter (showing my stipend amount).
:white_check_mark: University ID cards (as a GTA and PhD student).

:pushpin: Other Supporting Documents
:white_check_mark: Medical test certificate (TB test).
:white_check_mark: Dependent’s education qualification.

:five: Key Takeaways and Final Advice

:bulb: DO NOT skip reading the official UKVI page to understand your specific requirements before applying.
:bulb: Organize your documents in PDFs if you need to submit multiple screenshots or images.
:bulb: There is NO mention of a required bank statement for dependents under the GTV route (as of my application time).
:bulb: Ensure your dependent’s documents are clear, readable, and well-labeled before submitting.

This is everything I submitted, and my dependent received her visa in less than 2 weeks.

I hope this helps! If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
