Hi everyone,
I’m applying for the Global Talent visa (digital technology – entrepreneurial route), and I had a quick clarification regarding recommendation letters.
One of the criteria is that recommenders should have “detailed knowledge of the applicant’s work over a period of 12 months.” I understand the intent behind this is to ensure that the referee has had meaningful exposure to the applicant’s capabilities and impact.
In my case, one of my strongest supporters is an accelerator mentor who’s been closely involved with my startup journey for the past 4–5 months. They’ve seen my product evolve from idea to traction stage, advised on product-market fit, and witnessed firsthand the entrepreneurial effort and momentum.
While our relationship hasn’t crossed the 12-month mark, the depth of insight and feedback exchange has been substantial. Would a letter from such a mentor still be considered strong — if it highlights this context?
Appreciate any guidance or experiences others might share!
Thanks,
Pranamika

It doesn’t meet the criteria. It should be at least 12 months.

The LOR should be from people who have good knowledge of your work for at least 1 year. This is clearly stated in the guidance, I believe it is to show they have seen your capabilities and impact over a reasonable period.
Also, LOR from a mentor can actually weaken your application. The reason is that it can be seen as biased and the reviewer may also view it as not coming from a professional work relationship. It is better to get your LOR from people who have worked with you directly in a professional capacity and for at least the required 12 months.
All the best.

Okay, thanks for your reply @Francisca_Chiedu and @Raphael!
One follow-up question please, would it work if one of the recommendation come from “Former Divisional Director” of the department I’m working at my current company?
Thank you for your support!
Yes! As long as he is not your current direct manager, works in the tech sector, has a track record that qualifies him to recommend a GTV applicant, and has known you and your work for at least a year.

It works but I would rather not use two people from same organisation

Thanks @Raphael and @Francisca_Chiedu for clarifying!
One last question — one of my recommendations is from the CEO of a startup I worked at before but I worked directly under her since it was a small team.
Would that still be acceptable as a recommender?
I would suggest it STRICTLY meet the 12 months criteria. Not 4 months, not 10 months, not even 11 months and 20 days - but 12 months. I’ve seen rejection letters for even 11 months in the past.

This is tricky but if the letter mentions immediate manager then it may not be elligible.
