Exceptional Promise - eligibility advice needed :)

Hi dear all, hope all is well.

I am preparing my application for the Global Talent Visa (Exceptional Promise). I previously worried that this route was strictly reserved for software engineers or CS experts, but given my work in BIM automation and AI, I’m hoping to verify if my profile fits the criteria.
My cv and evidence are as below and would be gratefull if you can help me to find out firstly if I am eligible to apply, and then about my documets:

I have been on a Skilled Worker visa since 2023, progressing from Graduate BIM Engineer to Senior BIM Manager in just three years. My work sits at the intersection of Digital Transformation and Construction Tech.

My Evidence Summary:

  • Recommendation Letters:

    • Head of Department at a Russell Group University (Co-author of my published research).
    • A prominent BIM Lead/Industry Expert (familiar with my proprietary code and papers).
    • A Digital Lead who can verify my programming and technical implementation.
  • Mandatory Criteria (MC): A published paper (17 citations, 5000+ read, top 14% on ResearchGate), plus confirmation of guest lecturer sessions on AI for MSc/BSc students at the University of Liverpool and University of Derby.

  • Optional Criteria 1 (Innovation): I developed a 5,000-line Python script that automates a complex BIM task from one week to 5mins. I held introduction meetings with five industry leads/BIM managers and have their validation letters confirming this reduced a week-long process to just 5 minutes. I am currently transitioning this into an API.

  • Optional Criteria 4 (Academic/Research): My 2023 paper on integrating BIM and Deep Learning introduced a novel methodology for BIM design coordination and automation. It has gained 5,000+ reads and significant academic traction in a short time.

Additionally, I serve on my company’s AI working group, where we develop in-house software and evaluate emerging market products.

University degree:
MSc in BIM and digital transformation from University of Liverpool -2022.

My Questions:

  1. Does my role as a BIM-focused developer qualify as “Digital Technology” in the eyes of Tech Nation?
  2. Does my rapid career progression (3 years to Senior Manager) help offset having less than 5 years of total experience? My total experience is 15 years, but just 3 out of it is in digital field, the rest was as Estimator, Quantity surveyor and Senior Quantity surveyor.

I would be incredibly grateful for any feedback on my documents or eligibility. Thanks in advance!

BIM automation and Python development is digital technology. The guide explicitly includes technical applicants from non-technical organisations, so working at a construction firm doesn’t disqualify you. Your 3 years in the field is also fine for Exceptional Promise - the guide says applicants can “have had a longer career in another type of work,” so your QS background works in your favour.

The main structural issue is your MC/OC4 overlap. You’ve listed the same paper under both, but Tech Nation doesn’t allow the same piece of evidence for more than one criteria. You’ll need a separate piece for OC4 - peer citations by other researchers citing your work, for instance - or replace OC4 with a different optional.

The OC1 evidence is your strongest asset. External validation letters from 5 industry leads confirming the 1-week-to-5-minute reduction is exactly what assessors look for. One thing to check: make sure those letter writers qualify as established digital technology experts in their own right. BIM managers from construction firms can be borderline - Tech Nation expects “well-established individuals acknowledged as experts in the digital technology field,” not just the industry.

Cleanest path: MC (paper + citations) + OC1 (Python tool + letters). Don’t force OC4 with the same paper - it won’t hold up.

Thanks a million for your detailed and promising reply @Akash_Joshi .
Does it make sense to use the confirmation letters of my three guest lectur that I held at university of Liverpool and university of Derby as other OC2 (proof of recognition for work beyond the occupation)?

@Hooshiar_Ahmadpanah

BIM is an acronym and could mean anything if the full meaning is not clearly stated. Do you mean Building Information Modelling Engineer? If yes, then I believe a BIM Engineer is considered a tech expert because it focuses on digital tools, 3D modelling technology, and software driven construction workflows. The next important thing is how your evidence aligns with the criterion, even if the role is not listed, you should still be eligible since it is a technical skill in tech.

Recommendation Letters

A Head of Department at a university is not necessarily a tech expert unless he also works in the industry. Academics are not automatically tech experts; you need to confirm this from his career history. A prominent BIM Lead, Industry Expert, or Digital Lead can be okay.

Mandatory Criteria (MC)

Research papers published on ResearchGate are usually dismissed because the open e-journal platform does not review papers, and anyone can register and upload content. Also, a published research paper alone does not meet MC requirements for recognition unless you show the recognition elements. Confirmation of guest lecturer sessions alone is also not sufficient. You need to show invitation letters that recognise you as an expert or keynote speaker, and evidence of you speaking on stage to at least 100 people.

Optional Criteria 1 (Innovation)

It will be difficult to show that a “5,000‑line Python script” is innovative when AI can generate similar output quickly. If the script is embedded into a usable system, application, or device, with a granted patent then this can be strong or if you can provide proof of market use and revenue. Reference letters from industry experts can be okay but are not enough on their own, as they must reference evidence of ionnovation you provide.

Optional Criteria 4 (Academic/Research)

Your 2023 paper on integrating BIM and Deep Learning with 5,000+ reads can be okay, if not published on ResearchGate. Accadamia and the likes but a reputable peer reviewed journal. Also remember that you need at least two unique pieces of evidence for each criterion. You will need another or more strong piece of evidence demonstrating exceptional ability through academic contributions. You can also obtain an endorsement letter from an academic, like the Head of Department at a Russell Group university in your LOR.

Overall, you need to take some time to gather more evidence to increase your chances.

All the best.

Dear @Raphael thanks for your detailed reply, mate. Yes, BIM stands for Building information modelling.

Recommendation Letters

I can provide a letter from BIM leads, Actually, I though the university one is more reliable, thanks for confirming.

Mandatory Criteria (MC)

My paper is published on eCAADe 2023 conference book, it is a very famous conference for digital construction/architecture, at the time, I just opened a ResearchGate profile and added my paper to it. It is also on the university’s web page, which was not something I wanted, they did it themselves.
The methodology of the paper is novel, first time in the world as experts confirmed, however, it needs investment to become a practical software, so I didn’t continue working on it because I didn’t have the budget.
Could you please tell me what do you mean by “recognition elements”?

Optional Criteria 1 (Innovation)

AI now can write everything, that is true, but the idea is important. I wrote the code myself, took me a long time as it was complicated and I had to ask other people for help to troubleshoot the errors most of the times. While there are other platforms/software in market that do something similar with expensive subscriptions, my code gives far better result with higher accuracy with a different methodology. Considering my current visa situation I don’t have time to make it a platform otherwise it definitely would make money as well. Do you think if it becomes a live webpage with proof of having subscriber it would be enough and game changer?

Optional Criteria 4 (Academic/Research)

now given my explanation on the paper above, do you think I can use it for OC4?

My speeches were not held for 100 people unfortunately, so you mean I can’t use them as OC? I have confirmation letters from both universities mentioning every details.

really appreciated your feedback guys, it is a very big help as I couldn’t find anyone else can help.
