Advice on Recommendations for ET

This has been asked a few times i am sure but from successful applicants I want to ask:

  • The recommendations provided in personal capacity are not on letterhead?
  • is docusign validation mandatory or e signature/ scanned would work
  • for CV the pdf linkedin profile can be attached while contact details and brief intro is already there on the letter of recommendation
  • do the recommendations need to include how I can contribute to the UK tech sector? As that would depend more on my plans within my startup however the recommenders will definitely endorse my skillset for contribution to UK or whereever I base myself.

Hi @Mamasquad
Here’s some information based on my understanding of the guidelines that might help clarify your questions:

Personal Capacity and Letterhead: If a recommender is writing the letter in a personal capacity rather than as an official representative of their organization, it is generally acceptable for it not to be on company letterhead. However, it’s always ideal if the letter includes some indication of the recommender’s position or organizational affiliation, even if it’s not on formal letterhead, to help establish credibility.

DocuSign or Digital Signature Requirements: According to the guidelines, letters of recommendation can be signed using a digital signature service like DocuSign, which allows for an additional document log file that verifies the letter’s author and confirms that the signature originated from a different IP address than yours. This adds an extra layer of authenticity. However, if using a standard e-signature or scanned signature, it may still be acceptable, but using a service like DocuSign is highly recommended to meet all verification requirements.

Using LinkedIn PDF as CV: It’s unclear why you’d prefer to use a LinkedIn PDF profile specifically. The main purpose of providing a CV or LinkedIn profile is to give the assessor a clear view of the recommender’s credentials. Either a LinkedIn profile link or a CV generally works, as long as it includes relevant work history, qualifications, and current role. The application form includes a field to add the recommender’s LinkedIn profile link, which should be sufficient if the profile is complete and up-to-date. If the recommender doesn’t have a LinkedIn profile, you can simply attach their CV instead.

Addressing Your Contribution to the UK Tech Sector: Yes, the recommendation letters should ideally mention how your skills could contribute to the UK digital economy, even if it’s in a broad sense. While your specific plans may not yet be concrete, the recommenders can speak to the potential impact of your expertise in the UK tech sector based on your skillset, experience, and demonstrated success. This general endorsement helps support your case for future contributions.

Please note, this response is based on my understanding of the official guidelines. I recommend reviewing the official guidelines thoroughly for complete details.

Hello @Mamasquad ,

  • The Tech Nation guidelines state that the Letter of Recommendation should include the organisation’s logo and address, “if applicable." This suggests that if these elements are unavailable, referees can omit a letterhead.

  • Using docusign is not compulsory. There are other options that can be explored like printing, signing scanning the letter or sign using a PDF signature tool. What is important is for no one to doubt the origin of the letter

  • The Letter of recommendation begins with a brief introduction of the recommender. The contact details (including the link to the Linkedin profile) can be attached to the letter. Recommender also is expected to attach their CV or other proof of credentials to the letter

  • According to the guideline, your recommendation letter needs to include the contribution you will make to the UK digital economy.
